Celebrating a local hero

Staff from Sheldon Bosley Knight’s Shipston office were among a crowd to see the unveiling of a plaque honouring a local motorcycle champion.

Cecil Sandford was World Motorcycle Champion twice in the 1950s and a resident in the town.

The memorial honouring him was put up at the site of the garage, AR Taylor Garages, owned by his father-in-law.

Mr Sandford, who died last year, won in 1952 and 1957.

About 50 people gathered to celebrate outside the site in Church Street which is now micropub Thirst Edition and Harry’s Barbers, on Saturday, September 21.

The town council had been keen to have a plaque put up in honour of Mr Sandford’s achievements and after discussion with the Heritage, Amenities and Leisure Projects committee (HALP) it then needed a location to be agreed.

The site of the former garage where he worked was considered to be the ideal location and would link well with the Heritage Trail the council is proposing for later in the year along Church Street.

However, it needed the owner’s permission and it was this which the council approached Sheldon Bosley Knight’s lettings manager Sarah Scaysbrook for help with.

Sarah said: “Town councillor Chis Howarth called me to see if we could help put the council in touch with the building’s owner.

“We knew the owner as he is a longstanding client of our team here in Shipston. We were able to ask him if the plaque could be placed on the wall of the property and he kindly said yes.

“The event was well-attended and we are proud to have had an involvement in making it happen.”
