The long run

In 2021 Sheldon Bosley Knight’s commercial director, Mark Treadwell raised £800 for Prostate Cancer Research by taking on a running challenge. Four years on and he’s back on the road this month participating in the charity’s fundraiser, Run 60 Miles In April.

It is a cause close to Mark’s heart and since running has been his exercise of choice since he was a teenager, this nationwide event seemed the perfect fit.

Mark said: “My grandfather had prostate issues over 10 years or so and so the charity has become very important to me.

“Statistically one in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, making it the most common cancer in men. If you are over 50 or have a family history of it, your risk is even higher, so the key to successful treatment is to get checked out and don’t leave things too late.

“Although I don’t do as much running these days as I used to, it is my go to in terms of keeping fit and so when this opportunity came up, I thought it would be a good way to sort myself out and raise awareness of the charity and what it does, as well as hopefully bring in a bit of money.”

Mark has already got off to a flying start having completed over a sixth of the miles required in the first week. Factoring in rest days, he is aiming to do an average of two miles at a time, alternating his routes to include Deddington where he lives, Stratford-upon-Avon where he works and the treadmill.

He is also hoping to encourage some of the men within the Sheldon Bosley Knight business to either join him or, even better, promise to go to their GP to get checked.

He said: “I’m lucky to live in such a beautiful area with some very picturesque routes and the weather has been fantastic.

“Although raising the money is an important part of this challenge, my main aim is to raise awareness and encourage all men to get themselves checked. It’s one of those cancers where the sooner you find it the better your chances of recovery.”
