Why move to Loughborough?

Loughborough is a vibrant market town in Leicestershire, close to the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Boasting a wide variety of housing styles, markets, green spaces and good schools, it is a firm favourite with young people, families and those who love and enjoy all that a busy town has to offer. It also boasts lovely parks such as Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill Park, great shopping and plenty of entertainment options not to mention some beautiful countryside right on the doorstep.

Loughborough is easy to get to and has accessible road and rail routes to nearby Leicester to the south, Melton Mowbray to the east, Burton-upon-Trent and Ashby de la Zouch to the west and Derby and Nottingham to the north. It is close to the M1 and various A roads allowing access to nearby towns and cities and there are regular bus services in and around the town. Its railway station is on the East Midlands and Midland Main Line with trains to Kettering, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester as well as further afield to London St Pancras.

Loughborough has a wide variety of good schools both primary and secondary including Beacon Academy, Loughborough CE Primary School, Stonebow Primary School, Charnwood College, Woodbrook Vale School and Limehurst Academy. There is also a great selection of other state and private primary and secondary schools a bit further afield in Leicester, Nottingham and Derby. It’s not just schools Loughborough is known for – its university is one of the best in the country and has been awarded gold for student experience, gold for student outcomes and gold overall – the highest accolade possible – in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework.

Football, cricket, rugby union and tennis feature heavily in Loughborough with both amateur and professional clubs. There are also American football, netball and swimming clubs and the Leisure Centre has a gym and exercise classes plus squash courts and a swimming pool – good news for GB swimming sensation and World Individual Bronze medallist in the 50m backstroke, Lauren Cox, who is a student at the university!

Loughborough is a buzzy and busy town with a great atmosphere, not least thanks to its big student population who study at Loughborough University. There is a twice-weekly local market and a popular vintage market on Fridays and the town centre has a variety of boutiques, chain stores and pubs, restaurants and cafes. There is a street fair every November which is always a highlight of the year.

The town is known for its heritage and boasts five museums including the Bellfoundry Museum which tells the story of bell making across the centuries. The Town Hall is the venue for live entertainment such as musicals, comedy gigs, concerts and exhibitions and there is a sizeable cinema for film fans. Elsewhere the Great Central Railway, a heritage railway based at Loughborough Central Station, is a very popular attraction. Largely operated by volunteers, trains run every weekend and on bank holidays throughout the year. Its route is just over eight miles long and travels between Loughborough and Leicester.

The University is a big draw and is famous for its sporting credentials with many Olympians studying here. Leamington born and sponsored by Sheldon Bosley Knight, Team GB’s swimmer Lauren Cox is currently an undergraduate there.

Loughborough has a wide range of property for both sale and rent and its housing stock includes everything from flats to terraces, spacious detached family homes to semis and new builds ensuring there is something for most budgets. With its connectivity, great atmosphere and good schools, it’s little wonder Loughborough is a desirable and sought-after place to live.

Loughborough has a thriving retail offering with lots of independent shops and businesses alongside the high street chains and a twice-weekly market which regularly has more than 100 stalls. It also boasts several well-regarded cafes, pubs, restaurants and hotels as well as supermarkets. A little further afield the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester boast a range of independent boutiques, high street chains, restaurants, delis, and eateries.
