Student Tom gets legal advice on his career choice

With work experience being a great tool to help young people decide on a particular career path, our legal partners stepped in to offer one young man a week at their office.

With a career in law firmly in his mind, Tom Harland spent his time at Jephson Legal (JL) learning the ropes of conveyancing.

The Year 11 student from Warwick School was shown the process right from the beginning – where JL gets its referrals from, the relationship the team has with Sheldon Bosley Knight, how the team makes sure the clients are legally prepared and how to complete a file.

He worked alongside the new business, sales progression and legal teams, and saw at first hand what they do, as well as helping out with some of the tasks such as checking and uploading documents to the system including Land Registry, Power of Attorney, bank statements and general correspondence from clients, solicitors and mortgage companies.

During the week Tom also took the opportunity to find out more about the firm, the work it does and see first hand what it’s like in a busy conveyancing office.

Tom said: “I would like to pursue a career in law when I finish my education but there are so many different options within the sector to choose from. To be able to gain more of an understanding of one particular aspect has been fantastic and I’m very grateful to have been offered this opportunity.

“The team at Jephson Legal was great. They were all very helpful, showed me the ropes and offered me useful career advice.

“It was very interesting and I have learned a lot this week.”

Jephson Legal’s new business manager, Felicity Cleaver said: “Tom has been a delight to have in the office this week, always punctual, well presented and polite.

“He’s been an asset to the legal team especially with many of the admin tasks such as closing files which are forever growing for our busy team!”
