Visitors to Leamington’s Victoria Park on Sunday could have been forgiven for thinking they were seeing a multitude of Father Christmases.
In fact, it was actually hundreds of people, resplendent in Santa suits, who were walking, jogging or running the annual 5k Myton Hospices Santa Dash.
Among those who crossed the finish line was Sheldon Bosley Knight’s team of seven – Andrew and Katie James, Claire Paginton, Ian Watson, Becky Jones, Norma Woodward and Sophie Higginson.
All had different personal reasons for joining in the fun, but all were keen to raise as much money as possible for the charity which provides compassionate care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families – both in their inpatient units and out in the community.
So far they’ve raised £745 and helped push the total amount for Myton Hospices to more than £81,000.
As only 17% of The Myton Hospice’s money comes from the NHS, it must fund the rest itself. Just £68 could cover the cost of relatives’ accommodation so people can stay close to their loved ones over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. A Myton at Home service for a patient for one day costs £360 and £450 could fund an inpatient bed for one day. A patient’s meals for one week costs £126 and £158 could fund two children’s bereavement counselling sessions to help a young person who is facing their first Christmas without a loved one.
Lettings manager Claire Paginton said: “It was a great atmosphere all round and a lot of fun with about 1,500 Santa attendees!
“Team SBK Leamington Spa’s donation was £745 which exceeded our target so we are delighted.”
Katie James added: “Some of us have had family and friends who have spent their final days in the hospice so we are happy to support such a vital service in our local community.
“We hope to participate in some of the other fundraising events The Myton Hospices are organising in 2026.”
