World Planning Day 2024

Today is World Planning Day. Originally known as World Urbanism Day, it is the brainchild of Argentinian professor, Carlos María della Paolera, who established it in 1949.

Celebrated in more than 30 countries around the world, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the event – an important milestone for the profession and those who work within it.

It is a chance for planners and communities to come together to celebrate how good planning improves the lives of people and benefits society at large, creating vibrant places to live, work and play together.

This year’s theme is Homes Start with Planning with a focus on how planning goes beyond the simple layout of streets or where homes are positioned. It’s about creating sustainable, liveable spaces where people feel connected and secure.

Good planning ensures homes aren’t isolated, rather they’re part of a larger community with easy access to schools, parks, healthcare, leisure and transport infrastructure, thus making daily life more convenient and fulfilling.

Associate director and head of Sheldon Bosley Knight’s planning and architecture team, Natasha Blackmore da Silva, said: “World Planning Day highlights the vital role of planning in creating and shaping communities.

“This year’s theme, Homes Start with Planning, emphasises that a well-designed home is more than just a building; it’s part of a thoughtfully planned community that enhances people’s quality of life.

“By focusing on accessibility, safety, sustainability and community connection, planners create environments where homes are part of supportive, resilient neighbourhoods.

“This theme reminds us every comfortable, secure home begins with a foundation of smart, forward-thinking planners.”
