Stratford voted UK’s happiest place to live

Internationally renowned as the birthplace of arguably the world’s greatest poet and playwright, Stratford-upon-Avon can add another accolade to its credentials.

The Warwickshire market town has come top in a survey to discover the happiest place to live in the UK.

Homeware company Furniturebox interviewed 5,000 people across the country asking a series of questions to find out where their happy place was.

Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the surroundings and green spaces; the provision of good state schools; the provision of affordable housing; and access to quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops and cultural attractions.

The survey showed the happiest places are not defined by wealth but by the quality of life within them.

Not only is it a very pretty town with some lovely architecture, parks and gardens, it also boasts a busy retail offering with a healthy mix of both independents and chain stores as well as a market at the weekend.

There are also a wide variety of cafes and restaurants as well as some great pubs and bars, fantastic schools and of course a thriving cultural scene with the Stratford Playhouse, the MAD Museum, cinemas and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s HQ on the banks of the Avon.

For Sheldon Bosley Knight’s assistant branch manager, Michael Fulford, it’s no surprise Stratford scored so highly.

He said: “From the human statues on Henley Street near Shakespeare’s house, to the market by the RSC and occasionally, pop-up events on the grass near the banks of the river, Stratford is definitely a happy, friendly and welcoming place.

“Here at Sheldon Bosley Knight, we think Stratford is a fantastic place to live and work, whether you’re a first-time buyer looking to get your foot on the ladder, or a family looking to live near one of the highly regarded schools. Perhaps you’re an investor looking for a buoyant rental market? Stratford has it all.

“With a range of properties from Victorian terraced homes in the beautiful old town, right up to executive residences off the Banbury Road, there really is something for everyone here.

“Why not pop in and see us in Rother Street and let us show you just why!”
